The BSC & BEA Reach New Tentative Agreements...
The School Committee (SC) and the Belmont Education Association (BEA) reached significant milestones during their October 29 negotiation session for Unit A (Educators):
Total Agreements: The parties reached four new tentative agreements, bringing the total number of positive agreements to more than 70.
Paid Parental Leave: The most significant progress is the introduction of paid parental leave. The new contract will provide 20 days of paid parental leave for educators (the first 10 paid by the District, the next 10 paid via a shared sick-leave bank). This change is intended to help attract and retain staff.
Instructional Time: Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to adding 15 minutes of instructional time to the student day without extending the total workday for educators.
Funding Update: The Select Board expressed support for allocating limited one-time funds from certified free cash to help settle the contracts, pending Town Meeting approval. This complements the recent Town Meeting approval of additional state aid for a new literacy curriculum.
Next Step: The next bargaining session is scheduled for November 12. The goal is to settle contracts, finalize new benefits, and process pay adjustments by the new year.
